Teacher, if I learn this, I'll be able to take the train to work myself later and won't have to take the bus anymore

Virtual public transport offers an innovative solution to a crucial question in special education: how do we teach children to travel independently on public transport? For teacher Very, who works at KPO Special Education De Kameleon in Roosendaal, virtual public transport has offered much more than just practice in travel skills. The VR learning platform increases her students' self-confidence and independence. In this article, we share her experiences and discuss the impact of virtual public transport.

What is Virtual Public Transport and how does it work?
Virtual Public Transport is a learning platform where students can simulate a complete public transport journey using a virtual reality headset. The tool guides them step-by-step through key aspects of public transport travel:

● Planning a train journey

Checking in and out with an OV chip card

● Transfer from bus to train

● Finding the right train and the right platform

While physical travel often creates too much stimulation or stress, Virtual Public Transport offers a safe environment to practice. For students at De Kameleon, this is a crucial first step toward independence.

The benefits of Virtual Public Transport for Special Education

At KPO De Kameleon, a school for students with intellectual disabilities aged 4 to 18, the individual development potential of the children is paramount. Virtual public transport is a perfect fit for this.

"Our students often have a sheltered upbringing. Traveling by public transport is a completely new experience for them," says Very. "With Virtual Public Transport, they can first gradually get used to situations they might encounter on the road, without pressure and in a safe environment."

Since the introduction of Virtual Public Transport, 35 students at De Kameleon have learned basic travel skills. While complete independence isn't yet achievable for every child, the progress is clearly visible. "Even small steps, like understanding the check-in process, make a big difference," says Very.

Self-confidence: the biggest gain

The impact of Virtual Public Transport extends beyond just travel skills; it also boosts the students' self-confidence. “Some children say: ‘Teacher, if I learn this, I can take the train to work by myself later. Then I won’t have to take the bus anymore,’” Very says proudly.

While not all students will eventually travel independently, for example, because they can't read, the process of practicing in Virtual Public Transport provides a sense of empowerment. "Sometimes you just have to try something," says Very. "Then you discover what else is possible. Parents are often amazed at how much their child can learn."

Customization

For a few months each year, KPO De Kameleon has access to one of the two Virtual Public Transport sets made available by the West Brabant Region (RWB).

"The children were really disappointed when the glasses had to be moved to a different location," says Very. "It would be great if we had a fixed number of glasses at each location, so we could train more students simultaneously." Training children with special learning needs can be quite intensive, Very knows from experience. "Some students, for example, children who cannot read because they are visually impaired, or students with motor disabilities, need one-on-one support from their teacher." Nevertheless, according to Very, the training is definitely worth it: "It's great to see how quickly some children pick it up through play, especially those who already have experience with gaming at home."

Virtual Public Transport: Innovation and Future

In the future, a broader implementation of Virtual Public Transport could be a huge step in improving independence in special education. The platform demonstrates that technology can be not only practical but also contributes to students' self-confidence and quality of life.
